English and English Literature are taught as a unified course in which reading, writing, speaking and listening extend, complement and develop each other in the studies of Literature and the search for personal expression. Engendering a love of literature which will last throughout life is the aim at the heart of the subject, whilst giving pupils the ability and the opportunity to communicate confidently, clearly, sensitively and intelligently in their writing and their speech is of equal benefit.

We have always encouraged our pupils to take advantage of a wide range of creative writing opportunities. We have been delighted, in recent years, that students from the college have been awarded a number of prestigious National prizes including young Journalist of the year and young film Critic of the Year. We have attracted noted authors such as Penelope lively, Deborah Moggach and Niall Williams to judge our own college writing prize and many other writers like Bernard Cornwell, Katie Ward, Jennifer Donnelly, Louis de Bernieres and Meg Roscoff who have visited as guests of our literary Society.
