The Classics involve the oldest subjects on the curriculum of a public school and are unique in the spectrum of experience which they cover. Their components are linguistic, literary, historical, aesthetic and philosophical. The chief skills that the study of Classics offers are those of thought and communication.
It is the aim of the Department to make the study of Classics available to every student willing and able to benefit from it; to facilitate the highest possible standards of Classical scholarship; and to present to each student a course of study appropriate to his or her aptitudes. In our teaching we combine the best of traditional and modern teaching methods and appraise current practice continually.
The incredible breadth of the study of Classics means that there is always something more to learn and discover. It reveals the importance of language, communication, analysing, attention to detail, fluency of language and thought, accuracy and the ability to see connections.
